Welcome to the Cape Henlopen School District, home of the Vikings! Cape is a naturally beautiful district bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Delaware Bay and Rehoboth Bay, stretching from the Indian River Inlet up through the Town of Milton and covers some of the most scenic and historic landmarks in all of Delaware. Our district office is centrally located in Lewes, "The First Town in the First State." Elementary Schools are located in Rehoboth, Lewes and Milton. Two beautiful new middle schools feed into our state-of-the-art 210,000 square foot new high school, designed to be one of the finest high schools in the nation. Cape Henlopen High School, in fact, was recently ranked as the finest (non-charter) public comprehensive high school in the state by "Delaware Today" magazine. Cape is also home to the Sussex Consortium, an internationally recognized program for children with autism. The Consortium serves all of the Sussex County school districts and has attracted interest from schools around the world. The total district enrollment for all schools currently is approximately 4500 students.

The district is supported by a highly involved and diverse community that provides rich cultural and educational experiences for students. From parent and booster organizations, to a wide range of community arts groups, business partners, foundations and community agencies, the Cape community is involved! They support a highly dedicated staff of about 800 employees committed to a mission of seeing every Cape student "achieve personal excellence and lifelong learning skills to become a productive and responsible citizen." The Board of Education is comprised of seven highly dedicated individuals from various areas of the district who volunteer tremendous amounts of time on behalf of our children.

Cape students consistently perform in the top third of Delaware schools, and are highly successful in academic competitions across the state. Award-winning arts programs complement highly competitive athletic teams and a wide range of co- and extracurricular programs that make Cape a frequent district of "choice" in Delaware.

A number of new initiatives are underway in the district. In the past 4 years, we have developed a five-year strategic plan to carry us into the next decade. Students, staff, parents and community leaders were part of teams that developed action plans for a number of key objectives. We also air-conditioned every classroom in Cape, and established full-day kindergarten for every family that wishes to participate. A college preparatory program for students who typically would not pursue post-secondary education (AVID) was also established. The Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation supports teacher mini-grants and student scholarships. Current plans include establishing Academies of Excellence in the High School for career-oriented curriculum, and pursuing 21st century technology such as interactive whiteboards and document presenters in every classroom.
